Hanukkah Gifts That Are Not Socks!

Copy of Green and Blue Illustrated Candles Hanukkah Card.png

Every child that grew up in a Jewish household knows the customary Hanukkah gift are socks. And while I love a pair of Kirkland socks to get me through the winter I wanted to put together some more inspired and creative gift giving guide for Hanukkah. Jewish holidays are steeped in traditional, not only including guilt from your parents but a story of perseverance and not taking the small miracles for granted. In a year like 2020, those two lessons have never felt more important.

Hanukkah, a holiday synonymous with food is the perfect time to gift cookbooks for all the foodies in your life. While there are many amazing Jewish inspired cookbooks, The Gefilte Manifesto, revitalize beloved old world foods with ingenious new twists on Ashkenazi cuisine. Jeffrey Yoskowitz & Liz Alpern have filled this book of recipes for pastrami, brisket and blintzes, kugel, latkes and more!

Candles and oil being the foundation of the story of Hanukkah it seemed fitting to include a fun craft kit to make your own. Kiwi and Co has a fun geometric candle making kit for all ages! The kit includes learning how to fold a geometric mold, dying wax, and transform wax into a candle. This year especially while everyone is home this interactive gift is the perfect activity for the whole family!

The Hamsa, a middle eastern symbol representing the evil eye, historically used to ward off evil spirits. (something we could all use these days!) I love the idea of keeping that around your neck to continually bring its owner success, harmony as well as protection. There are four options depending on what stone you’d like in the center: Moonstone, Turquoise, Opal and Black Spinel.

I’d be remiss to not include my own Hanukkah collection here! It’s taken countless burnt latkes and the recipient of many Hanukkah socks but I have come to consider myself a gift giving maven.

Jelly Donuts (aka Sufganiyot) have become a symbolic dish for Hanukkah. While latke’s are being fried in every Jewish household during the holiday Jelly Donuts are a bit tricker to make and usually left to the baking professionals. So if you have an amateur baker in the household who wants to try their hand at this delicious dessert this Mini Donut Maker is perfect for them!
